Improving grid reliability with fiber optics
To increase the reliability, resiliency, and security of the power grid, electric utility providers need to modernize their power distribution networks. Reducing the impact of faults is vital and that means power line faults must be quickly located to expedite repair. To accomplish this, electric utilities are upgrading communications networks to leverage fiber and passive optical network (PON) architectures. Low latency PON communication enables increased density of automated electrical switches, allowing for more granular and accurate fault sensing, fault segmenting, and power redistribution via more elegant auto-transfer schemes.
